The department of Dravyaguna Vijnana is one among the first Departments of Vaidyaratnam Ayurveda College, since its initiation in 1976. The strength of Ayurveda itself is in the treasure-trove of herbs used in treatment. The department believes in providing insights into the medicinal properties and identification of medicinal plants by training and mentoring UG students of the college, thereby equipping the future generation of Ayurveda physicians.. The department also deals with Teaching and Research about medicinal plants through research and development projects, awareness classes, seminars, workshops and publications. Propagating information about the herbs, promotion of conservation and cultivation of medicinal plants are core activities the department.


FACILITIES

Herbal Garden

The Department of Dravyaguna vijnana maintains a herbal Garden of 4180.64 sq.m and houses more than 1501 plants belonging to 400 species. The herbal garden helps in elucidating practical training in the identification of herbs and in the conservation of many rare species. The garden has been attracting students of Ayurveda, school students, Ayurveda enthusiast and the public alike.

Museum

The department maintains a reference museum consisting of useful part of the medicinal plants with all details. There is an elaborate collection of 460 specimens of plants consisting of 117 wet preserved specimens and 243 specimens of raw drugs. The museum also showcases 282 charts and herbarium of plants belonging to more than 46 families.

Pharmacognosy Lab:

The department includes a spacious pharmacognosy laboratory to train the students about identification and quality assurance of raw drugs through pharmacognostic techniques.

Department Library:

The department library has a good collection of books dealing with the subjects of pharmacology, pharmacognosy, monographs of herbs, biochemistry, nighantu etc. The library also displays detailed compilation of all detailed drugs.

Clinical OP:

The Department conducts regular OP on every Tuesday. Single drug pilot studies are conducted on monthly basis as House Surgeons Project under guidance of faculty of Drayvaguna department

Ongoing Project:

NMPB approved project in the area of research and development “ Exploring the Ayurveda concept of controversial drug (Sandigdha dravya) by Pharmacognostical, Phytochemical and DNA barcoding of source plants of Ayurvedic drug “Murva”

SMPB approved project Prithu – Promoting Home herbal Garden among Kudumbasree members conducted in December 2021

BHOOMIKA- Project for Promoting Home herbal Garden and distribution of medicinal saplings .

The department has been frequently conducting state level and national seminars

Social Outreach Programs:

Exhibition of medicinal plants, awareness classes and workshops for the promotion of conservation and cultivation of medicinal plants etc. are other important activities of the department
